Tips for Hair Extension Care

Tips to Make Your Extensions Last!

Hair extensions are great to use, especially when you take care of them.

When I first started wearing extensions, I didn’t realize the maintenance that was required to keep them together. Instead, I treated my extensions like they were my real hair. Anyone that wears extensions knows you can’t do that! If you want your hair extensions to stand out, you’ll need to ensure that you take care of your hair extensions.

Each type of hair extension requires different attention. For example, you don’t have to care for straight hair extensions, the same way you care for deep wave extensions.

There are some essential tips you need to know to ensure that you don’t ruin your extensions and lose the investment you put into them! Caring for hair extensions is NOT a tough task!

When Caring For Hair Extensions

There are a lot of tips out there for those looking to care for their hair extensions.

For example, Never be afraid to brush out your extensions! Especially your curly hair. Get those tangles out before you hit the shower or swim, or do anything involving water while you have your extensions in. Tangles+ Water = Matting and we don't want that!

Anyway, we’re only going to get into about three different tips. These tips are cardinal rules that you should follow to keep your hair extensions clean and freshly styled. Not only will these tips help you take care of your hair extensions, but they will also increase their longevity.

Let’s get into it.

Identify Your Hair Extension Type

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to hair extensions is that they don’t know which type of hair extension they are using. It’s important to know which kind of hair extensions you are wearing so that you can adequately take care of them.

Raw hair is the lowest maintenance, but also the most expensive. Raw hair, is hair in its natural form with no steam or chemical processing. This hair is truly unprocessed. The raw hair sold at HairFixx is one of the best places to source raw hair. This ponytail style hair is much silkier than hair that you will find anywhere else.Yes, the cost for this hair is much more expensive but you really get what you pay for with this. This hair can easily color to a #613 or #60 with proper dying methods of a professional.

Premium Virgin hair, has been steamed to change the curl pattern of the hair. This is our best selling hair because the quality vs price is really hard to beat. The ratio of long hairs is really strong with the Premium hair. This meaning there are fewer short hairs in the bundle to give it a more full appearance.

Lightly Cleanse Every So Often

No matter how long you choose to wear them, you’ll need to cleanse your extensions lightly. Whenever I wear hair extensions, I make sure to wash them every two weeks gently.

When it comes to cleansing, you don’t want to use shampoo, but a light conditioner that will help you loosen up tangles.

A light conditioner won’t strip your hair extensions of their necessary shine! Always try using a conditioner and brushing all tangles out of the hair before adding water, in order to soften the hair and loosen those tangled ends.

Don’t Wear Them Too Long

One of the most important rules of hair extensions is not to wear them too long. Our extensions can be used for over a year,  but that doesn’t mean you should wear them for over a year straight.

You need take them out, cleanse them and reinstall them. The important thing is that you take them out and give them a break. Bring them to your stylist and revive them. That's what we're here for!

The longer you wear the extensions, the more difficult it is to remove build-up and clean the extensions, so they are not run down, dirty and dry. You would not go months without washing your real hair, so do not do that with your extensions!

Make Sure to Remember

Taking care of hair extensions don’t have to be difficult. It’s quite simple to keep your hair extensions looking clean, fresh and shiny.

Follow these tips and watch how the nature of your hair extensions change!
